Many years ago, the Monterrey Institute of Technology begun the tradition of organizing 4 lotteries in a one-year period. The major prize is a house and a monetary fund for its maintenance. For its 50th Anniversary the Institute asked Ricardo Legorreta to design one of the houses. The design had to emphasize the climate, culture and lifestyle of the citizens of Monterrey. A wall isolates the house from urban life. Once past the wall, there is a courtyard that acts as the main pedestrian and vehicular distributor. Inside the house there is another patio which creates an ambiance of intimacy, an image of the Mexican house. To walk through the courtyard is a whole experience of light, water and color. The house was resolved in two floors with a series of patios. The living, dining and family room face the main patio, which at the same time gives place to the swimming pool and landscape areas. All of the common family activities take place in the first floor. The intimate spaces, bedrooms, are located in the second floor. The exterior finish is stucco, painted in different tones of yellow terra-cotta, and with strong accent colors through the house. The interior maintains the intimacy of the exterior finish with a variety of floors chosen for each area of the house. The intimacy, peace and family feeling were the theme for the furniture, art and accessories without losing the functionality and easy maintenance.
