This project was a very interesting challenge from the very start. The owner, a prominent businessman, had very ambitious programmatic needs. The setting for the house is a beautiful ocean side lot on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The house was conceived as a gathering place for the owner and his family. The primary objective was to design areas that clearly responded to an active family life and to maximize the ocean views diminishing the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The general layout of the house takes advantage of the natural stepping down of the lot from the street towards the sea. The main entrance acquires a mysterious quality, as one has to walk through a series of spaces – intimate courtyard, tall tower - to discover a blue courtyard that opens up into the sky. Water elements (reflecting pools of different shapes) and the sound of water play an important part in the design. The courtyard leads to the main living areas, which then open up into a double height loggia where the lap pool is located taking advantage of the garden and ocean views. The house is organized in two levels. The first-floor houses all the public areas living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast area and exercise room, as well as three bedrooms. Through a double height gallery, characterized by a staircase framed by a long skylight and a vault, one can access the second story. The bedrooms for the clients children and grandchildren, as well as the master suite, which consists of a master bedroom, office and sculpture studio, are also located in this level. It was of great interest, throughout the design process, to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces. This was achieved by using different types of spaces: patios, terraces, balconies, etc., with different characters offering various ambiences throughout the day.
