This house was a very special challenge for various reasons. The main one is that we had already designed the clients weekend retreat in the mountains. It is for this particular reason that we tried to create a completely different ambiance, which was not easy, as it was the same architect and the same client. The house in the mountains interacts a lot with the exterior, always trying to take advantage of the spectacular views. In contrast, this is a completely urban site and the house lives to the inside. This was the reason why the project was solved around patios that would isolate it from the urban life of Mexico City. We sought a different atmosphere in each one of the patios, so that there would be variety in the way the house is lived. The entrance patio has several playful platforms with water that allows a peaceful and soothing environment, as much for everyday use as for the visitor who comes by foot. Next, the living room leads out to a patio where you can eat and in case of a large reception becomes an extension of the house. The dining room patio was developed in collaboration with Francisco Toledo, a renowned artist from Oaxaca, who designed a series of platforms with different soils from Oaxaca in shades of red and green and plants from the desert. This patio becomes the main theme of the dining room and the architecture follows the painters design. Each one of the bedrooms has views to different patios and terraces giving the house a lot of variety. In the interior design as in the selection of materials, we tried to make the house both Mexican in spirit and also very urban and contemporary. We had the opportunity to design even the smallest details and thanks to the availability of good Mexican craftsmen, a lot of unique and made to order pieces were obtained. The art, painting and sculpture were always a central theme for the house. The owners wanted to live surrounded by art, the pieces were placed not as in a museum, but as an integral part of the house.
